The British band Grade 2, known for their electrifying live performances and exceptional musical sensibility, brings straightforward classic punk into the modern age. Their self-titled album, set to be released on February 17 via Hellcat, is a bone-crushing 35-minute work that equally stirs, exhilarates, and liberates. In anticipation of the release, they have today unveiled their new single "Midnight Ferry," which features cool guitar riffs and lively shout-along verses that culminate in crisp vocal harmonies.
"This song is our story, a narrative about one night and the truth of growing up in a rural town," the band explains. "Capturing the spirit of adventure that tries to escape all worldly obligations, even if just for one night. You just have to know that you will be brought back down to earth on the way home."
Fifty years after the genre turned the music world upside down, Grade 2 from the UK brings the raw power of old-school punk to a new generation.
Childhood friends Sid Ryan (vocals, bass), Jacob Hull (drums), and Jack Chatfield (guitar, vocals) formed the band at the age of 14 and honed their craft with Clash and Jam covers before developing their own sound. They merge the almost mythical musical heritage of their home island, Isle of Wight, with the grim reality of Grade 2, who grew up in a weary coastal town, creating fiery punk music marked by passion, fear, humor, and despair.
After signing with Hellcat Records in 2018 - led by Tim Armstrong of Rancid - they released their second album "Graveyard Island" in 2019. With the release of "Grade 2," comes their most representative work to date; a pounding tour-de-force with fifteen tracks that authentically narrate the uncompromising ethos of punk intertwined with the outcry of contemporary injustice, personal identity, and the frustrations of Gen-Z youth, told by three boys through whose veins punk flows.
