Does punk belong in a museum or on the streets? The new Punk Museum Düsseldorf confidently answers: Both! To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the subculture, the special exhibition "Be Realistic: Demand The Impossible! 50 Years of Punk" opens today, October 22, 2026. As a temporary guest at the historic Theater Museum in Hofgartenhaus, the project brings the wild and untamed history of German and international punk to life.
Behind the museum project are two Düsseldorf originals: Jäki "Eldorado" Hildisch, who is considered the first punk in Germany, and musician and author Rudi Esch (Die Krupps, Book ELECTRI_CITY). The exhibition is largely based on Hildisch's personal collection and includes more than 400 exhibits – from yellowed fanzines, buttons, and handwritten song lyrics to rare photos and original relics from the early days of the Düsseldorf underground.
Düsseldorf is regarded, alongside Berlin and Hamburg, as the most important breeding ground of German punk. Bands like Male, Mittagspause, Fehlfarben, KFC, Östro 430, or later giants like Die Toten Hosen shaped the face of the city just as much as the legendary Ratinger Hof.
The fact that the exhibition is by no means dusty is due to the close collaboration with the development studio Neonreal: Through interactive VR experiences, visitors can immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the old Ratinger Hof, step up to the drums, or spray virtual graffiti. A nice detail for fans: The artist Jürgen Weber has also recreated the legendary pub as a detailed miniature model.
The special exhibition is intended as a growing, living archive and will be on display at the Theater Museum Düsseldorf until the end of 2027.
