It wasn't long ago that "Waveboy" by Mia Morgan was the surprising indie hit of the last normal summer. Now, the artist from Kassel announces her debut album "Fleisch" full of dark pop and abyssal lyrics for April 29, 2022. As the first single from it, Mia Morgan releases the song "Teenager" today and announces a tour for 2022.
Her first EP was titled "Gruftpop," which was released in early July 2019 and already garnered attention back then. "Waveboy" became a secret favorite for many, and the video for "Es geht dir gut" sparked a new wave of Tumblr nostalgia – it's hard to say whether Mia Morgan is in tune with the times or simply herself. Just like the EP, "Fleisch" was produced by Max Rieger, known as a reliable figure for catchy angularity and has worked with artists like Drangsal, Ilgen-Nur, and Jungstöter. Between Kassel and Berlin and amidst various lockdowns, 12 dense, sparkling songs emerged against the ill-tempered anti-attitude of the German music scene.
In album length, Mia Morgan now presents herself with less gloom, but more pop, freely drawing from all genres and offering more of everything. More highs, more lows, more rawness, more externalities, more internalities, more skin, more flesh. "Fleisch" tells terrible stories beautifully – zombies in the candy store and blood-smeared prom queens in the torture cellar. The lyrics aim for where it hurts, and Morgan spares herself the least in public self-revelation. Her language is always feminist, sex-positive, empowering, and an example of a new generation of political musicians for whom pop with attitude is not a flex, but a matter of course. It has become a coming-of-age album that addresses the struggle of growing up just as much as the long, cold fingers of long-ago traumas. And it is an album about being a girl in a world where sometimes nothing is harder than existing in one's own head and body.
The theme of strange youth runs like a red thread through the 12 tracks. The first single "Teenager" deals with the miserable school years and the tormenting uncoolness that lingers well into adulthood. An empowering song that, with a powerful chorus, pulls the sting of this time, but does not cater to the expected "Finally cool" narrative, instead self-ironically stating: "I am and will remain a clown." Sometimes it’s not about triumph or revenge, but about shouting out the status quo as a form of self-empowerment.

“Fleisch” is also a reckoning with the sins of our time: intense Instagram stalking, negative self-talk, the exhausting comparison with the beauty of others, overthinking, mixed consumption, toxic relationships, digital vanity, boundary violations, staged photos, beautified truths. Morgan, who sometimes enters the stage dressed as a biblically pure innocence, guides listeners through a funhouse mirror of human flaws.
But instead of just pointing fingers at the wounds, Mia Morgan always flashes a rebellious tenacity and feminist defiance – not subtly between the lines, but bright as stadium lights. That Morgan is political and loud is particularly evident on social media. There, she also continues her very own aesthetic, without which "Fleisch" cannot be understood. The essence of Mia Morgan is also found in her outfits, in captions, emojis, tweets, and self-made memes. And that is precisely what makes her a unique phenomenon: the skillful linking and merging of all visual and acoustic possibilities to express herself as an artist.
Anyone who listens to Mia Morgan must also see her, follow her, track what development is currently happening, what message is currently important. That music consumption in 2022 is no longer just a soundtrack, a video, and a tour poster, but also a TikTok, a Spotify canvas, or an Instagram story is proven better than anyone by Morgan, who masterfully commands the keyboard of digital forms of expression and is thus far ahead of other artists in her genre. The debut "Fleisch" is another element of her solar system, in which the artist herself stands at the center.
"Fleisch" by Mia Morgan will be released on April 29, 2022.
