The charismatic US singer/songwriter received a Grammy in 1991 and celebrated his international breakthrough that same year with the timeless hit "Walking In Memphis."
In 2010, he created a special homage to his favorite songs from 1970, interpreting them in a unique and intense collaboration with top producer John Leventhal (among others, Johnny Cash, Joan Osborne, Michelle Branch).
It went straight to Leventhal's studio in Manhattan to see what could be done with some special songs, and that's how everything got started. Initially, it was just Marc and John, accompanied by producer Rick DePofi, later inviting guests like India Arie, Aimee Mann, Jim Lauderdale, and the great vocal hope Kristina Train. Thus, an exciting and creative process emerged for all involved in a personal setting, where songs by Cat Stevens, John Lennon, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Van Morrison, or Paul McCartney are rediscovered.
"Listening Booth: 1970" also means for Cohn a regeneration and creative recovery phase, five years after one of the most formative and frightening experiences of his life in 2005. On the way back from a concert to his hotel in Denver, Cohn was shot by a criminal – the bullet entered his head and miraculously did not damage the skull, allowing it to be surgically removed that night. Marc Cohn was relatively quickly discharged from the hospital. A long and intensive working phase followed, and Cohn released his acclaimed album "Join The Parade" in 2007, touring the country in over 150 cities.
"I am a person who sees family as the top priority. It is not right to bring children into the world and then spend all your time in the studio or on the tour bus. But the night in Denver reminded me how important my passion for music and my audience is to me...
Now it’s about paying special tribute to the artists who changed my life and made me who I am today and what I do."
"Listening Booth: 1970" thus brings Cohn back to his roots, similar to "Walking in Memphis," his worldwide hit from 1991, which is simply about the strength and healing power of music.
