MAD CADDIES have released a new EP.
MAD CADDIES are bringing five new songs into the world with “House on Fire“ since their last album, which was released in 2018.
With a title like that, one might think it refers to the current geopolitical situation, the state of affairs in the USA, Corona, environmental destruction, or the destruction of our habitat. It would be so fitting, but anyone thinking along those lines is mistaken.
The band plays a very relaxed sound in the first two songs “Let it go“ and “Waiting for the real thing“. This sound is influenced by jazz and reggae and inevitably evokes thoughts of beautiful summer days, even though the music conveys nothing beautiful. The two songs broadly deal with longing and love. Once unfulfilled, once a hymn to the love that must always be renewed, keeping the flame warm and so on. The band conveys this so charmingly that it doesn’t seem so difficult to keep the flame burning. Each of us knows that this is not the case, and yet we mostly manage it... somehow...
“Strange Days“, song number three, actually refers to the thoughts one inevitably has with the title of the EP. It’s not really hopeful.
No one knows what will come, but one thing is certain:
Strange days are coming
This much we know
This text is presented in a sugary pop melody with subtle brass instrumentation. As long as such beautiful music comes from the speakers, it can’t be that bad... or can it?
With “Dogs of War“, the lyrics are similar. It’s so important to get rid of all the demons, all the dark thoughts in your head, namely the “Dogs of War“. It helps to clear your mind. The Californians achieve this to some extent with this piece of music.
With “Wake my Baby“, you are indeed awakened. For the first time on the album, things move forward faster. There’s even a hint of punk rock, albeit with a healthy dose of pop.
The EP is a beautiful sign of life that the band gives. The music is almost too beautiful for the sometimes deeply meaningful lyrics.
MAD CADDIES continue on their path, which has become increasingly clear in recent years. A path defined by much love, a lot of reggae, ska, rocksteady, and jazz, and the coming together of people. It sounds a bit hippie here and there, but seriously, what would the world be without love? A place full of hate, and that can’t be our wish, can it?
The only truly negative aspect of the EP is that it has been released exclusively digitally.
