NOWHEREBOUND from Austin, Texas has been on the scene since 2010. During this time, they have released seven albums.
Now, with “Mourning Glory,” their eighth release is here. An album with 19 (!) songs that showcases the full range of the band.
The singer of NOWHEREBOUND is Christopher Klinck, who also sang with his distinctive voice in the legendary band BORN TO LOSE. Unfortunately, that band is now a thing of the past, but Christopher's voice remains, and some of the songs stylistically remind one of BORN TO LOSE.
There are 19 songs that, as mentioned, partly evoke memories of BORN TO LOSE; for example, the tracks “Six Hearts on Fire,” “La Frontera,” or “Unbreakable.” Fast, melodic, powerful punk rock that gains its character from Christopher's rough, sometimes almost screeching voice. Here, longing thoughts of the past band BORN TO LOSE arise, which had many fans with their high-speed punk rock.
However, NOWHEREBOUND is by no means a successor to BORN TO LOSE. While that band certainly had a significant influence, it is just one part of the six-member band, which also offers calmer songs influenced by folk. Examples include the songs “A blessing a curse” (singer-songwriter with strong background vocals), “By Art or Design” (very subdued, rocky, wistful), and the very captivating song “This ship can float on hope” (calm folk song).
The band showcases the full range of their abilities on this record.
It is a very multifaceted, varied album that will please old fans of BORN TO LOSE but will also excite listeners who were not familiar with Christopher's previous band.
One can only hope that the band will manage to come to Europe again in 2020 to present their new and old songs. Live, it will surely be something very special.
