ROCK THIS TOWN, a name that sounds more like Rock'n'Roll, Punk, or just Rock. One would expect that it relates to these music styles. Is that narrow-minded thinking? Is that why the promotion and booking agency ROCK THIS TOWN has taken the PATRIK JANSSON BAND under its wing and sent me their debut CD?
The PATRIK JANSSON BAND consists of mastermind Patrick Jansson, who has played with Hellsingland Underground and Maryslim, and Henning Axelsson (keyboard, which often suspiciously sounds like a Hammond organ), Fredrik Hartelius (drums), and Per Enstedt.
The band plays a unique blend of Rock, Blues, and Jazz. Most songs are mid-tempo, while some are a bit slower, like the bluesy “Separate Ways,” which almost reminds me of my first blues experiences in my youth. That was back when blues dancing was exciting because the girls were unusually close, and one might even exchange first tender touches. That was at the age of 13-17, so quite a long time ago.
“Separate Ways” is yearning, catchy, and like every blues, melancholic. A beautiful song to dream to. This seamlessly transitions into the slightly faster “Please tell me,” which, with a well-placed, light tempo shift, pulls you away from the dreamy mood of “Separate Ways.”
The songs are musically mature and show that Patrick Jansson, who is responsible for the album, is a great musician with a good sense for melody, rhythm, and catchiness. The ten songs on the album sound as if they were recorded in one session. Everything flows seamlessly. Completely relaxed, yet cool, almost casually captured on CD.
