On 'Neonlicht,' BETONTOD pays homage to the time when NDW and New Wave began. How does Frank remember this period? "I would say: ambivalent," he laughs. "As little punks, we obviously hated it back then; everything from that corner was somehow frowned upon. But when you listen to the songs today, you have nice memories. And that's not so bad, I think."
Yes, the 80s were a crazy time; the Cold War, Miami Vice, blow-dried hairstyles, and padded blazers (often in pink or neon green), Commodore, Ataris, and Bontempi organs were all part of everyday life, and yet watching series like "Stranger Things" or the original films from back then (Back to the Future or The Goonies) always brings back nostalgic/romantic memories. Frank confirms this: "That feeling of a time that was too bright, loud, and chaotic, experiencing everything for the first time, that's what we wanted to convey. That feeling has never left us, and we still see the bright colors, the weird clothes, and hairstyles in front of us, and we've come to terms with this quirky time!"
BETONTOD is confident that with "ZEIG DICH!" they are releasing probably the strongest album of their career. Good things come to those who wait, and it can definitely get even better, as "ZEIG DICH!" impressively proves. And perhaps these songs are now an even more important sign after the back and forth of the pandemic than they would have been before. Even if the world may not be quite the same as it was before - it goes on. Go out, live your life, and "ZEIG DICH!" is the perfect soundtrack for that.
A masterpiece with the best of the past and present. In other words: Others will have to get past these songs, this power, these melodies first. No matter if from Düsseldorf, Berlin, Rostock, Cologne, or elsewhere. Because this is how punk rock with attitude is done, punk(t)!
For their release gigs on May 28 and May 29, the band has come up with something special for the hardcore fans, as a vinyl version was produced especially for this evening. The show will take place at a friend's venue, where Betontod are also guests from time to time, and for the guys, this club in Essen is something very special, as it is run with a lot of heart and passion. Frank is excited: "We hope for a packed house and are looking forward to seeing the faces in the front rows when we present our new songs. That's always something very special, and because we want to experience this moment twice, we have come up with something new for the second day. We have always wanted to play just for the ladies. We knew there could be discussions about this, but if we feel like it, then we just do it!" So ladies, get your tickets!
The album will be released on May 26, 2023.
