Confessions of the Fallen - the first new studio album from Staind since 2011 - comes to life with the debut single "Lowest In Me", which is both familiar and fresh.
The trademarks of the sound that the band established nearly 30 years ago are all present - Aaron Lewis' vocals, shifting from melodic wailing to a hellish roar, Mike Mushok's wild guitar driving the track forward, Johnny April and Sal Giancarelli delivering it with great energy. But some new accents also creep in, electronic flavors that give the song, as well as the rest of the 10-track album, a refreshed and contemporary sensibility, letting us know that it is still Staind, but that Staind has not been in a time capsule since the self-titled album of 2011.
"I wanted to modernize the sound and bring us up to date," says Lewis. "You can certainly recognize the band, but at the same time, you can hear that we have been paying attention and understand what kinds of sounds and approaches we can use that maybe weren't available last time." Mushok adds: "It’s undeniably Aaron's voice, and that goes for the songs as well. We sat down and spent a lot of time focusing on the direction, and we really like how it turned out."
