On February 10, 2023, the fourth and final single "Kids In My Age" from the new Deichkind album was released. A furious yet pointedly radical critique of society set to an unrelenting EBM beat, whose poetic power is further emphasized – and ultimately broken – by the accompanying video.
DEICHKIND - KIDS IN MY AGE (Music Video)
"Kids in my age got an apartment for 500 euros at your age," raps Deichkind. Thus, it is clear: Just because one is a professional youth themselves, it does not mean that other professional youths out there can't also be uncomfortable at times.
The accompanying video now places the lyrics of "Kids In My Age" in a special spotlight. The detachment from personality and star cult has been a central element for Deichkind from the very beginning. The focus is on staging and content; everyone knows who is rapping, singing, dancing, or performing, but for the reception, it plays a subordinate role.
With this fundamental idea, the video for "Kids In My Age" only seemingly breaks away: We see Deichkind rapper Kryptik Joe against the backdrop of a vaguely defined science fiction-like setting reminiscent of "Alien I." Moreover, we see … nothing. Just Kryptik Joe as the speaker in this poetically charged landscape.
It becomes clear, especially when the camera pulls away and the speaker is only discernible as a distant yellow spot: The actual main role in this video is played by the lyrics of "Kids In My Age." By radically placing the content of their lyrics at the forefront and underpinning it with equally poetic images, they arrive at a form of abstract pop poetry, in which the vehemence of the text becomes drastically palpable. One is almost drawn into these lines.
Time and again, Deichkind addresses the contradictions and life lies of their generation on their new album "Neues Vom Dauerzustand," and on "Kids In My Age," they succeed particularly well with a furious EBM beat. With instant slogan classics like "dangerous half-Googling," the Trojan party horse Deichkind takes aim at the demands of the present, and in the end, Kryptik Joe bursts into laughter right in the middle of the song, stripping the staging of its overly solemn gravitas. It feels unplanned.
