The musician Stella Sommer released a new single titled "A Lover Alone" along with a music video on July 30, 2020. A new album is planned for autumn 2020.
2020 is a strange year. It is a year in which one asks questions one never thought they would ever voice. Are there situations where leopard-patterned masks are acceptable? Is the person next to me really 1.5 meters away? Is there perhaps still a chance to escape the seemingly inescapable quarantine-themed movies, books, and albums rolling towards us? And who just coughed here?
2020 is also the year in which one must finally ask what kind of barrel Stella Sommer has actually fallen into. Just a conventional potion barrel? A I-do-everything-right barrel? A songwriting barrel? A mixed bag of all of the above? One does not know for sure. However, the fact is that Stella Sommer has enriched the local music scene for 10 years now with her work and has now settled into a genre of her own in this country. Somewhere between folk, chanson, and orchestral pop, Stella Sommer delivers album after album with almost dreamlike certainty and seemingly effortlessly, and with each new record, she seems to surpass herself. Each album is more beautiful than the last, each a world unto itself.
It all started so innocently. With charming scrappy indie, Sommer's project Die Heiterkeit appeared on the scene in 2010. The songs were good, the music rumbled along. A few girls making music, the music press was pleased. So far, so nice.
Then in 2016, one could begin to sense what Sommer was capable of. With the double album "Pop&Tod I+II", she released her first major work with Die Heiterkeit. 20 songs that were bigger than life. In 2018, the first English-language solo album "13 Kinds of Happiness" followed, which also garnered international attention. In 2019, the Die Heiterkeit album "Was Passiert Ist" received top ratings everywhere. A masterpiece after a masterpiece, so to speak. This also provided the insight that no one writes more beautiful songs about loneliness than Stella Sommer. How fitting in this time of isolation that today the new Stella Sommer song "A Lover Alone" is released. An unintentional Corona anthem. A new album is planned for autumn 2020.
