Battery acid puddles, noise disturbances, arrests, police violence, prison cells, fines, confiscated amplifiers, food from cans, street concerts in all sorts of places, and 18,000 sold self-burned CDs...
...this summarizes the life so far of the hardcore outsiders and fanatical guerrilla street band Shoshin. After some initial difficulties, guitarist, singer, and songwriter Pete Haley found suitable companions in bassist Joe Stuart and drummer Sophie Labrey for his power trio. To bring their explosive mix of innovative riffs and irresistible rhythms to the people, Shoshin opted out of the usual initiation rites, such as concerts in empty, shabby clubs.
Instead, they preferred to play unannounced street gigs in busy locations with lots of people, or they would simply borrow crowds waiting for other events. Their seven-hour gig at Eurosonic Noorderslag was legendary, after which they were unofficially crowned the best band of the festival.
In this way, Shoshin has played in pretty much every major city in Germany, France, England, Benelux, and Eastern Europe over the years, always completely self-organized and without any permits or support from official sources. On the contrary: their spontaneous actions were often broken up by police in riot gear, as in Manchester, and the band was beaten up and spent the night behind bars. At a gig in front of the Centre Pompidou in Paris, they greeted the approaching gendarmes with the Imperial March from Star Wars, which promptly led to the next arrest, including confiscated equipment.
All these setbacks and obstacles have only strengthened Shoshin in their philosophy, which is heavily influenced by anti-authoritarian and system-critical thinking. Lyrics like those of "All For U.S." or "Plan C" speak a clear language. The spirit of punk rock and its authentic do-it-yourself attitude cannot be taken away from the band.
