PINK FLOYD: The Call of the Dead Sea
The music video for the title "Louder Than Words" features impressive, moving images of the Aral Sea
The probably last PINK FLOYD album "The Endless River" has become an almost pure instrumental album. Only the concluding song "Louder Than Words" sets Polly Sampson's lyrics to music: It is about what words cannot express - and what PINK FLOYD can only convey through music.

The promo clip for "Louder Than Words" also leaves one speechless. It begins with a lyrically dreamy ride over the clouds and shows selected scenes from the studio sessions for the song. However, in the second half, moving images reveal the state of the Earth: Large parts of the clip were filmed by director Po Powell at the now almost dried-up Aral Sea between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
In an interview with US Rolling Stone, Po Powell stated: "It is the most surreal sight I have ever seen and a shocking example of human mismanagement and the worst environmental disaster on the planet. The inflow (to the lake) has dropped to 10 percent of its original amount. This has destroyed the entire fishing industry and whole cities."
Powell contrasts the surreal landscape images with the hopelessness of a family whose grandfather once owned a ship, now rotting on the salt bed. Rating: A must-see!
The Aral Sea, once the fourth largest inland lake in the world at nearly 70,000 square kilometers, is now just a salty desert where no life is possible. The drying up and salinization of the lake is considered one of the largest human-caused environmental disasters. The cause of the drying is the artificial irrigation systems built since the 1950s, which have significantly diverted water from the rivers Amudarja and Syrdarja that feed the Aral Sea.
