DAVID BOWIE "Sound + Vision"
His 70 best songs from 1969-1994 in a 4-CD box!
DAVID BOWIE - the chameleon of pop music. No other musician has undergone as many incarnations as BOWIE, a.k.a David Robert Jones, the man with the differently colored eyes. All these transformations were not only enormously successful, each of them also opened up new dimensions in pop music that soon became entire fashion movements. Whether it was the glam rock from the Ziggy Stardust phase, the legendary collaboration with Brian Eno on the cult albums "Low" and "Heroes", which became the precursor to New Wave in the eighties, or his return to catchy rock in the late eighties with the formation "Tin Machine" – whatever happened: BOWIE was already there.
The 4CD box set Sound + Vision takes a concentrated look at BOWIE's work from 1969 to 1994, meaning: From an acoustic demo version of his first major hit "Space Oddity" (also known as "Major Tom“) to the soundtrack "The Buddha Of Suburbia" (1993), which fans consider the most underrated album in BOWIE's canon and was composed for the eponymous TV series based on a novel by Hanif Kureishi. For five decades, DAVID BOWIE has been perhaps the most versatile pop star, continually surprising by constantly reinventing himself - a unique phenomenon of contemporary culture, celebrated with the extensively designed exhibition "David Bowie Is“ that started at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, will be on display in the Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin until August 24, and will then also be shown in Paris, Chicago, and Groningen.
Between 1969 and 1994, 21 BOWIE studio albums were released, each containing several chart hits and cult songs. But it’s not just the well-known BOWIE standards that you can find on "Sound + Vision": "The Wild-Eyed Boy From Freecloud", a special recording of "1984/Dodo" from 1973, an outtake from the 75 album "Young Americans" titled "After Today", and the indispensable German version "Helden/Heroes" of his probably most famous hit from the eponymous album.
BOWIE's live performances are legendary, showcasing him as an unbeatable entertainer. As early as 1973, the concert film "Ziggy Stardust: The Motion Picture" was shot, the soundtrack of which was released in 1982 as a double LP and features three songs on "Sound + Vision". The live albums "David Live" (1974) and "Stage" (1978) are among the best-selling live albums in pop music. His foray into Brechtian theater with "Baal" (1982) is also one of the major events in the music scene and is represented with several songs. An informative 64-page booklet accompanies the 4-CD box set, providing an excellent behind-the-scenes look at the mystery of DAVID BOWIE.
Transformable like no other, BOWIE significantly shaped the development of pop music by crafting his own aesthetics. Thus, he presented himself as a folk-influenced songwriter with the album "Space Oddity" in 1969, switched to hard rock with "The Man Who Sold The World" in 1970, which even led Nirvana to a cult unplugged cover version twenty years later, reached the peak of glam rock with "Ziggy Stardust" (1972), became the archetype of the white soul singer with "Young Americans" (1975), introduced electronics widely into pop music with "Warszawa" (1977), and provided the blueprint for the New Romantic scene with "Ashes To Ashes" (1980). With songs like "Modern Love" (1983), he continued to fill stadiums around the world and even became a 90s legend with "Jump They Say" (1993).
The 4-CD box "Sound + Vision" will be released on September 19, 2014, by Warner Entertainment.
