DEEP PURPLE "In Concert ’72 (2012 Mix)"
When DEEP PURPLE took the stage at the Paris Theatre on March 9, 1972, they were at the definitive peak of their success and, not least, their creativity. In September 1971, their fifth album "Fireball" reached number 1 on the UK charts, and their upcoming album "Machine Head," which was released in April 1972 and aimed for top positions in charts worldwide, was just around the corner. Their iconic song "Smoke On The Water" had already been recorded, based on that riff which has been a staple for generations of guitar students and is likely the most famous rock chord progression of all time. With the lineup of Ian Gillan (voc), Ritchie Blackmore (git), Jon Lord (kb), Roger Clover (b), and Ian Paice (dr) – in other words, the legendary DEEP PURPLE Mk.II lineup – the quintet unleashed a rock fireworks display on stage, which was recorded by the BBC for the show “Sound Of The Seventies” and digitally remixed and remastered in 2012 for a vinyl edition.
On June 13, this captivating concert will be released for the first time on CD and for digital download as "In Concert ’72" in the excellent 2012 mix. Equipped with a 12-page booklet and the bonus track "Maybe I’m A Leo" in the soundcheck version, which was previously only available on the 2012 vinyl version, "In Concert ’72" is a definitely rediscovered highlight of rock history.
At the Paris Theatre, DEEP PURPLE did not dwell long on their past, playing almost the entire album "Machine Head," including "Smoke On The Water," "Highway Star," "Lazy," and "Space Truckin’". The only exceptions were "Strange Kind Of Woman," which was only included on the US version of "Fireball," and the Little Richard cover "Lucille".
However, DEEP PURPLE's future was already sealed in October 1972 when singer Ian Gillan announced his departure after fulfilling all contractual obligations. By the time of the album "Who Do You Think We Are" (1973), the band was no longer working together in the studio, and in June 1973, Gillan left the band, followed by bassist Roger Clover packing his bags in July. When Ritchie Blackmore left DEEP PURPLE in April 1975, the purple shine of one of the greatest bands in rock history had already faded.
All the more brightly does DEEP PURPLE's "In Concert ’72" shine towards us today. An album that deserves cult status.
