For his new album “Till Midnight,” Chuck Ragan has gathered a sort of “revival tour” lineup. This includes guitarist Todd Beene (Lucero), drummer David Hidalgo Jr. (Social Distortion), his long-time companions Jon Gaunt (violin) and Joe Ginsberg (double bass), guest singers Dave Hause, Jon Snodgrass, and Chad Price (Drag the River), Ben Nichols (Lucero), and Jenny O., as well as keyboardist Rami Jaffee (The Wallflowers). Because “Till Midnight” was meant to sound organic and alive, Ragan invited all the musicians to his home in California for a week — where they not only rehearsed and pre-produced the new songs but also went fishing together. “I wanted to capture a certain feeling,” says Ragan. He succeeded.
The album, produced by Christopher Thorn (guitarist for Blind Melon and Awolnation), features ten songs that strongly underline what makes the charismatic singer distinctive beyond his raspy whiskey voice: his great strength in blending folk and Americana with rock, and eloquent lyrics with catchy melodies and an unbridled punk rock ethos. Songs like “Non Typical,” “Bedroll Lullaby,” and “Wake With You” are once again an incredibly touching mix of a lot of heart and a lot of brain.
