Andrea Schroeder is an exceptional presence among German singers. A song poet whose voice captivates just as much as her lyrical, often melancholic texts.
With “Where The Wild Oceans End,” the Berlin native now presents her second album, recorded in a small, wonderfully equipped analog studio on the Norwegian Atlantic coast, under the direction of US producer Chris Eckman (The Walkabouts, Tamikrest, Midnight Choir). Compared to her 2012 debut “Blackbird,” which was received with equal enthusiasm by critics and audiences and set the bar high, “Where The Wild Oceans End” represents a quantum leap. The development that Andrea Schroeder and her band, featuring Danish guitarist and songwriting partner Jesper Lehmkuhl, have undergone in the year and a half since the release of their debut is fascinating. Without abandoning their roots, they have significantly but logically expanded their spectrum. Still, Andrea's disturbingly seductive voice remains at the center, and the stories she conveys are marked by deep, fragile melancholy, while the musical vision has clearly grown. “Where The Wild Oceans End” has become an album that flows seamlessly, leaving traces, touching the soul, and yet providing a warm feeling of deep satisfaction for the listener:
The Berlin song poet has created a powerful album full of drama and melancholy, somewhere between Leonard Cohen, Scott Walker, Nick Cave, and Nico, between desert rock, country, intricate folk, and fado influences."
Rolling Stone
"In a way, Andrea Schroeder fulfills the promise that Lana del Rey made and could not keep."
