"Shelter", the fourth album by the French exceptional band Alcest, is the result of a long journey into creative new territory. Visionary and multi-instrumentalist Neige, along with drummer Winterhalter, layer classic shoegaze guitar textures like banks of fog and refine them with enchanting melodies reminiscent of the Cocteau Twins, as well as epic, soundtrack-like elements and progressive song structures. The album will be released on January 17, 2014, via Prophecy Productions.
As guests on the recordings, Alcest welcomed Slowdive's Neil Halstead (who sings “Away”), Billie Lindahl from Promise And The Monster from Sweden, and the string section of Amiina. The album was recorded at Sundlaugin Studio in Iceland under the guidance of Sigur Rós producer Birgir Jón Birgisson.
The title “Shelter” already names the concept of the album: The songs are about a place of refuge and safety where everyone can temporarily escape reality to reconnect with what they truly are deep inside. Neige's personal retreat is the sea, to which all the represented pieces are dedicated.
Founded in 2000, Alcest has practically single-handedly birthed the genre of Post Black Metal, Shoegaze Black Metal, or "Blackgaze" with releases like "Le Secret" (2005) and "Souvenirs D’Un Autre Monde" (2007). Over time, the band has contributed to the surprising popularity of this style worldwide and continues to provide impulses for it. Since 2010, Alcest has toured in Europe, North America, Asia, and Australia. In 2012, "Les Voyages De L’Ame" was released, an international bestseller that brought the band numerous magazine covers and even into the studios of the BBC.
Additionally, the band will be performing in the German-speaking area in the following 4 cities to coincide with the release in January:
17.01.2014- Vienna - Szene Wien
18.01.2014- Munich - Backstage
21.01.2014- Cologne - GEBÄUDE 9
22.01.2014- Berlin - Lido
