"Anyone who wants to succeed as an artist in times of declining record sales must learn to seek their career beyond beaten paths." This self-awareness is followed by action from the artist, singer, and guitarist Phil Cornell ahead of the release of his new studio album. To shorten the wait for fans for the CD "Feeling A Moment", created with Bonfire producer Chris Lausmann, the "entertainment artist" known for his melodic rock-pop sound with an American touch is taking multiple approaches:
A personal YouTube channel serves the Munich native as a platform to regularly provide internet users with new content. The audience can not only take a look behind the scenes of an album production and stream current music videos, but also vote on which of Cornell's current songs will be recorded next (live and unplugged) for the online appearance through his self-developed format "Rock’n’Roll Democracy". Additionally, the ambitious culinary artist and wine connoisseur regularly offers his online community culinary-musical appetizers from his "Rock’n’Roll Kitchen". As a preview of the upcoming release, Cornell combines work with hobby in the clip series, blending Mediterranean or creatively refined local culinary art (including recipes) with acoustic live performances of new songs. TV presence complements the visionary media mix: The first single "Feeling A Moment" (available since March) is already rotating on the music channel iM1, airing on Sat 1 breakfast television, at McDonald's Instore TV, and serves as background music for the VOX format "Shopping Queen". In line with this, the full-blooded musician is currently also working as a fashion designer: His artist logo adorns a high-quality T-shirt collection produced in Portugal under the brand name "Phil Cornell Black And White Label“.
Despite this variety of surrounding activities, music has always been at the forefront. This passion was practically instilled in the Munich native, born in 1977. He grows up under the influence of opera-loving parents, receives early classical guitar lessons, and as a fan of the Beatles and Rolling Stones, already plays in school bands during his youth. His singing talent only comes to light during his studies as a sound engineer. Cornell leaves university with a degree and the firm realization that his place is not behind the mixing desk, but in front of the microphone. The result: singing lessons in the areas of pop, rock, and classical music. The latter he receives, among others, from the world-renowned US soprano Felicia Weathers ("AIDA", "Don Carlos", etc.), who quickly teaches him the proper handling of his voice.
In 2009, the debut album "A Part Of Me" is released by Tokapi Recordings. It contains, apart from a cover version, exclusively original material. The songs come to Cornell like flashes of inspiration. He manages to sketch melody, vocal line, chord progressions, and lyrical components in a very short time from a profound emotional moment. From his fondness for the lyrics of the English language and popular music with rock elements, a broadly appealing sound develops, significantly influenced by early role models like Bon Jovi. Verses wrapped in ballad form about love or interpersonal relationships stand alongside critical reflections on personal experiences in the show business. In parallel, the songwriter gradually builds (his) professional environment to be prepared for the shark tank of the music industry. This results in a publishing deal with BMG Music Publishing in 2010 and recently a management contract with Anja Lukaseder (since 2013). As an employee of the concert agency Armin Rahn Agency & Management and a former jury member on “Deutschland sucht den Superstar“, she has years of experience in artist promotion. Producer Chris Lausmann (Bonfire, Jaded Heart) also joins the new team.
He is the one who gives the guitar-driven pop sound of the second album “Feeling A Moment“ its rock edge. However, the second album, which again consists largely of original compositions, was only partially recorded in his studio (MS Productions). The title track – a cover of a hit by the British rock band Feeder – was created in Franz Plasas' home studios in Hamburg, while the rest was recorded in the Munich area. Three songs were recorded with Harald Reitinger and Uli Fischer (Dionne Warwick, Eminem, Haddaway) at the Beat Power Music facilities, unplugged versions at Markus Escher in Klangart-Studio, one piece at Ammersee, and recordings were also planned at the renowned Orange Sound Studio. Despite personal preferences for progressive rock bands like Muse or 30 Seconds To Mars, the production did not skimp on ballads or up- and mid-tempo numbers. Even classical elements are not missing in the versatile style mix of the CD. Under the direction of conductor Philipp Fabian Kölmel, known for the film scores of "Rubinrot" and "Französisch für Anfänger", violinists, cellists, and violists from the Bavarian State Orchestra give the title "Come Closer" its special touch through a special arrangement. Often, the visual implementation also contributes to this special touch. Based on Cornell's ideas, scripts are created for many of the songs, followed by elaborate video clips step by step. This is also the case for the second single "Take Me" (release date: 15.10.).
That sustainable success cannot be achieved overnight is beyond doubt for Cornell: "In a society where music has become disposable, persistently following your own path takes time. Only those who believe in their personal strength and continuously work on themselves have a chance to achieve their goals!"
"Feeling A Moment" will be released on 01.11.2013 and distributed via Believe Digital and Rough Trade.
