Sensational 4-CD box presents essential solo recordings of the soul and songwriter legend as well as duets with Roberta Flack. Two of the CDs contain unreleased live and studio recordings!
He was a gifted musician, an imaginative arranger, and a powerful singer: DONNY HATHAWAY left behind a powerful musical legacy that was created in just three years, during which he released a whole series of pop and R&B hits. Some of these were created as a solo artist, while others were in unforgettable collaboration with singer Roberta Flack. Unfortunately, his promising career suffered a break in the early seventies due to his struggle with severe depression, which led to his tragic suicide in 1978. However, even though he had only a few years to express his creativity and productivity, the music of DONNY HATHAWAY still holds invaluable influence today.
The 4-CD retrospective Never My Love showcases his immense significance with important studio and live recordings and 23 previously unreleased tracks! The box also includes a detailed, informative essay about HATHAWAY's life and music by music journalist Charles Waring, as well as some previously rare or never-before-seen photos.
Disc 1 presents 22 selected songs from his albums Everything Is Everything (1970), Donny Hathaway (1971), Extension of a Man (1973), and the soundtrack to Come Back Charleston Blue (1972), as well as his first major hit I Thank You Baby, which DONNY HATHAWAY co-wrote with Curtis Mayfield. Disc 2 reveals 13 previously unreleased studio recordings from 1968-1978, including some tracks from the late seventies, a time when HATHAWAY was mistakenly considered unproductive. Highlights include the title track of the box, Never My Love, and Zyxygy Concerto, which was recorded with piano and full orchestra. Disc 3 contains 10 previously unreleased live recordings from the club The Bitter End in Greenwich Village, which was HATHAWAY's resident venue. Finally, Disc 4 includes 13 hits that HATHAWAY recorded in duet with Roberta Flack - one of the most significant soul collaborations of the seventies.
The legacy of DONNY HATHAWAY is nothing short of overwhelming and receives comprehensive recognition on Never My Love for the first time.
