The song has been part of The Hidden Cameras’ live performances for many years, has become an underground favorite among many fans, and has matured into its current form over time; dark crooning over epic string chords. »Gay Goth Scene« was recorded years ago by Chad Benchetrit (Broken Social Scene, Do Make Say Think), but was only recently completed by the otherworldly vocals of the iconic Canadian singer Mary Margaret O'Hara.
»Gay Goth Scene« is an empirical fiction of a fictional family conflict: »We don’t want no gay goth scene in this house / We don’t want no gorgeous teen in your mouth«. Joel Gibb sings from a punishing, parental perspective, while O'Hara's free improvisation channels both the angry spirit of the devil and the pure soul of the protagonist. »Gay« and »Goth« are interchangeable harbingers of evil here, representing the exaggerated fears of parents towards an unknown world and the caricatured notion of a non-existent ›scene‹.
In Kai Stänicke's award-winning short film for »Gay Goth Scene«, another layer of interpretation becomes visible: the Berlin-based director addresses the hopeless situation of forbidden love in the classroom.
»Gay Goth Scene« – both song and film – is a tragic love story as well as a harbinger in tone and theme of the new The Hidden Cameras album »AGE«.
