It may not matter where POHLMANN was on that night when Kurt Cobain died. Perhaps it is also not crucial whether he actually meditated recently with Cat Stevens aka Yusuf Islam on the island of Mykonos and drifted through the devastated downtown of Detroit last year with Tracy Chapman. Pop can only be understood through a fictional veil.
What is important to understand is that everything we might never learn about POHLMANN - the dark, mysteriously glittering abysses of his biography - finds its origin on a construction site in northern Germany. The story goes like this: To make his father happy, POHLMANN completed an apprenticeship as a bricklayer as a teenager. Perhaps back then he perceived the world as little more than a large pile of cobblestones and realized: Damn life is indeed just an endless construction site!
This biography would have great advantages! It could be that POHLMANN today represents something like the Jack Kerouac among German musicians - a king of the streets, with the linguistic feel of a great idealist. That is moving. Not only because he juggles with the language of a brilliant drifter, but because he stirs us up in his songs with a wonderfully contradictory self-reflection.
But what does someone do who can move souls with music?
He reminds us that success is only granted to those who preserve their idealism and remain authentic. Although POHLMANN has not yet managed to revolutionize the world like, let's say, Bob Dylan or Albert Einstein. But idealism nourishes passion and great dreams, and the new album clearly shows how revolutions are prepared. If POHLMANN were to lose his idealism, he would stop immediately and do something else. But he has once again decided: for us. And thus for the view from the outside to the inside. His new album is here! And with it, he throws another cobblestone in the name of German post-protest music towards the construction site of life….
Protest movements have long since given way to irony today. There seems to be nothing left worth protesting for. But social criticism works differently today: hard and heartfelt, angry and charming, passionate and highly explosive - as everyone can attest who has experienced a live performance by POHLMANN.
POHLMANN's smile stands in a perfectly ironically broken distance to himself, and how POHLMANN plays with his reflection now brings even more joy, thanks to his new album. His sound exudes spiritual anesthesia - so that we might better digest the painfully raging social changes.
Just as Skin once exclaimed: "Yes it’s fucking political. Everything's political," POHLMANN's new album NIX OHNE GRUND (release date: 10.05.) cuts into many aspects of modern life and social networking.
Everyone knows today that everything private is political and explosive. POHLMANN's politics are situated between reality and riddle - an exciting mix.
