"Fortunately, happiness cannot be found on every second street corner." Certainly not every time the iPod is playing. But when it does happen, and a few songs touch you so deeply that everything else suddenly feels irrelevant, when memory and projection together adjust the clock for a few moments and your own life feels like a movie, perhaps that is happiness.
Between here and happiness. This is what Fabian von Wegen sings about. About life, the whole spectrum, the full program! Fabian von Wegen plays guitar and sings about love, "emotional lemons" and "risk investments." About life, about his life, about all that comes and goes, that doesn't come and is still there. His first love was the kindergarten teacher who played songs for him on the guitar; his parents from a 700-person village in Central Hesse always thought he would become a biologist – such things raise questions. The academic path in the humanities could not provide answers. Music could, a debut album in German, singer/songwriter, earthy, gritty sound full of soul, lots of melody, and a voice from the heart. Handcrafted, guitar, drums, double bass, Hammond, piano, Wurlitzer, and here and there a drum machine, played live with a quartet as a band.
Fabian von Wegen and his band belong to the generation of "somewhere-in-the-twenties." Many things keep one restless. Not losing your head over it, but making music out of it: that is the reason for a song. Fortunately, this will never change. Someone feels, someone plays a few chords, someone has a text in mind, a piece happens, and no one knows what will happen next. The feeling of being lost in what one calls life, and at the same time the hunger for it.
In the piece "Between Here and Happiness," Fabian von Wegen succeeds in illustrating the big questions with intuitive words. The feeling of sitting between all the chairs, and also the allure that exactly that can create. The search for happiness and the disorientation that sometimes spreads with it. The longing for freedom that drives you, but also the powerlessness that holds you back. And love....
Sounds complicated, it is, but Fabian von Wegen manages it with ease. Modern, poetic, sensitive, and relatable for everyone.
"Between Here and Happiness" is the first single from Fabian von Wegen's debut album "Emotionale Zitrone" (release date 08.03.2013).
