The album consists of twelve new songs that revolve around technology, the universe, and love. Musically, "English Electric" features confident synthpop, electro ballads, and modern club sounds, showcasing the British cult formation Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark in top form on the follow-up to "History of Modern" (2010).
Andy McCluskey on the artwork: "It fits perfectly that the cover of 'English Electric' is a contemporary distillation of traditional warning signals."
Peter Saville explains: "'English Electric' can best be imagined as brutally simple, dynamic energy... Since OMD wanted a design that should be as minimal as possible, the cover hints at the high voltage of an industrial legend – but can hardly compress it into a format."
