In early 2005, singer and guitarist Tobias Dirr participates in a band competition. The prize: a concert at the Munich Tollwood Festival. He wins. What he lacks is a band. In April, Tobias Dirr, guitarist Lucas Fernandes, and drummer Benedikt Abé meet for their first rehearsals. A month later, they perform their first concert in the tent of the Süddeutsche Zeitung at the Munich Tollwood Festival. The concert is a success.
The following day starts off normally. Then a call comes in: The opening act for Status Quo is stuck in traffic. Can blek le roc step in? They can. In 3 months, they go from 0 to 5000 listeners.
The band plays concerts all over Germany – including at the renowned Atomic Café. They support bands like Glasvegas, The Veils, Brett Anderson, Manfred Mann's Earth Band, and earn a reputation as an extremely versatile and impressive live band. They receive enthusiastic reviews.
"Incomparable is this 'delicate yet rich sound, which is as unusual as it is captivating,'" says the Münchner Abendzeitung. Their music creates, "this dubious-beautiful thrill, as one sometimes feels when reading old love letters," writes the Süddeutsche Zeitung, casually declaring blek le roc to be "the greatest promise for a better pop future for Munich."
And indeed – blek le roc sounds unique. Their music is not bound to any schema. Almost shyly, it captures the listener with the first note, grips them tighter, and leaves them waiting in reverent silence. Without pathos. The songs tell stories of failure, questioning, and waiting. They are open to the interpretations of the listeners. Everything is ambiguous.
Failure can also mean a new beginning here. Is waiting not simultaneously change? There is no clarity. And so, blek le roc perfects their play with the different perceptions of the listeners. Suddenly, a sharp, clear chorus breaks through the blurred delay loops. Just when everything is floating, when one wants to fall blissfully into the melody, everything collapses – only the echo remains.
Bringing all of this – which works so well live – to record is the next challenge. Songs are recorded, rewritten, and remixed again and again. In the end, nearly 20 songs are available for selection. 11 ultimately make it onto the album, which is produced by Klaus Jedelsky. For the production of "perfect man" and "lisbon," the band gets support from Alex Klier (Ärzte, Sportfreunde Stiller) and Uwe Bossert (Reamonn, collaboration with Nelly Furtado, etc.). The album will be released on April 27, 2012, on Bossert's label Achtung Music.
