Anna Ternheim: Muse of Dark Hours
Swedish exceptional songwriter in Germany
On tour in February with new album “The Night Visitor”
Anna Ternheim has the immense talent to transform the magic and special atmosphere of nighttime tranquility into touching music. Born in Stockholm, the 31-year-old now lives in the USA, where she transforms her songs into new settings through changing collaborators. For her new album “The Night Visitor” , the guitarist with the velvety voice engaged in a creative exchange with rock musician Matt Sweeney and was in the production hands of folk master Dave Ferguson. The result of this highly intimate work will be presented by Anna Ternheim from February 11 to 21 during her Germany tour in Cologne, Hamburg, Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, and Freiburg.
“On the day of my birth in 1978, there was a power outage. I was born at three in the morning by the light of flashlights. That’s why I compose nighttime music. It has always been this way and will probably always remain so,” says the Swedish cosmopolitan Anna Ternheim. Indeed, she explains further, she is always most creative when the deepest hours of the night arrive. It is the silence and solemn mood of darkness that runs through her work and comes to enchanting life during her intense live performances.
Anna Ternheim discovered her talent for the acoustic guitar early on. At the age of ten, she took her first lessons and soon realized that the theory behind music didn’t mean much to her. Intentionally, she made an effort not to dilute her self-taught approach with too much background knowledge, in order to give her songs an authentic, personal touch. After a year abroad in the USA, where she gained stage experience as the singer of the band Sova , she wrote and produced her debut album “Somebody Outside” in a decommissioned sawmill on the small island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea. For this, she received, as well as for the follow-up “Separation Road”, the P3s award, the Swedish equivalent of the Grammy.
Since 2009, the ethereal and mysterious singer with the fascinating voice has been living in New York. Here, she initially produced her third album “Leaving on a Mayday” almost entirely on her own. After the subsequent tour, she dedicated herself for the first time since her teenage years to extensively improving her technical skills on the guitar. Together with Matt Sweeney (Cat Power, Bonnie “Prince” Billy), she composed the pieces for her new album “The Night Visitor”, which was recorded last spring in Nashville. The work was produced by longtime Johnny Cash engineer Dave Ferguson, and she is accompanied by some of the most legendary instrumentalists in the Nashville music scene. With this, Anna Ternheim has once again created a work of unique, dark brilliance that showcases what an extraordinary and sensitive musician she is.
