Cry for me, Argentina: The Argentine punk rockers "Attaque 77" are more popular in Buenos Aires than the great genre forebears. This weekend, the quartet is touring Northern Germany with punk in the best 1977 tradition.
A tribute to Joey Ramone is part of the good tone at Attaque 77. In Buenos Aires, they carry the flag of the cult frontman of New York's proto-punk rockers Ramones, whose style they have dedicated themselves to. Not only in their home country are the four Argentinians already better known than all their role models, and concerts in front of five to ten thousand fans have long been the norm for them.
With their melodic punk rock in the best 1977 tradition, they struck a chord with a generation of disappointed youth; concerts against the Iraq War are as natural as addressing the situation in their country. In "Cancion Inutil," they address the disappeared of the Argentine military dictatorship, while "Consejos del Abuelo" features biting criticism of capitalism - and a rejection of the country's political class. Alongside their sound, such lyrics have made the band, founded in 1987, well-known far beyond their national borders. One million albums sold and countless circulating bootlegs are proof of this, as are successful tours in neighboring countries, the USA, and even Spain.
The first songs were recorded by singer Ciro Pertusi, drummer Leo De Cecco, bassist Luciano Scaglione, and guitarist Mariano Martínez at the tender age of 15; their first performance was in 1987 at the legendary "Cemento" in Buenos Aires. And it was there that Attaque 77 also bid farewell to their idol Joey Ramone in early August 2000. They paid homage to him, as well as to the Stiff Little Fingers and the Legion Urbana, on their most successful album Otras Canciones, which contains only cover versions.
In addition to such idol maintenance, the Attaque musicians pursue other projects: Luciano is working on David Bowie cover versions with his second band, while Leo is involved with Latin American percussion. Meanwhile, there is less and less time for life outside of Attaque 77 - the Hannover label Übersee-Records has also contributed to this.
