In addition to hanging out in the pedestrian zone, experiencing some culture in between can’t hurt. In Berlin Neukölln, from June 26 to 28, 2009, the eleventh art and culture festival offers this opportunity. Over 1000 participants will open their studios, galleries, and project spaces at around 270 locations. Music, theater, and art can be discovered for all those who stroll through the northern part of Neukölln with open eyes. Since it would exceed the scope here to list all 570 events, a look at www.48-stunden-neukoelln.de is recommended.
Nevertheless, here’s a brief promotional text about the highlights from the organizers' perspective:
Nevertheless, here’s a brief promotional text about the highlights from the organizers' perspective:
Neukölln Grün: Neukölln artists are searching for a place in nature. For example, the plots of a community garden or public green spaces will be used. After all, there are numerous oases in the festival area, including Körnerpark, Hasenheide, and various green spaces. Artists respond with art installations, performances, and actions to the contrast between urban and green environments. A special highlight is the exhibition NATurBAN, where artists from various cultural backgrounds engage with the relationship between humans and nature.
Art on Karl-Marx-Straße: This year, we will again focus particularly on the Neukölln "Magistrale" and let art emerge in the quiet courtyards and bustling squares along the main traffic axis. Nowhere else in the city is the contrast between hectic activity and dreamy courtyard idylls greater than here.
Sacred: This event series takes place in places of worship of different religions. The architecturally elaborate sacred spaces and their religious atmosphere allow art to enter into a differentiated dialogue with the transcendental (but the reference to humanity is also significant here). The coexistence of different religions has a long tradition in Neukölln. The artistic intervention can be fruitful for the dialogue between the communities and their visitors.
Open Studios: Studios are the places where the creative process of art can be best experienced. Here, it is easy to engage in conversation with artists. An ideal opportunity for people interested in art and its producers to take a look behind the scenes.
Neukölln Safaris – our guided tour program: The festival area with its 170 venues is large and diverse. Those who fear not seeing the forest for the trees can confidently join our informative tours. Tours through the Arab or Turkish Neukölln are offered alongside expertly guided tours through the individual art branches. The highlight series also offer tours to the festival's highlights. As part of the Sacred, for example, you will be introduced to the diversity of Neukölln's religious communities. A special tour program is offered by the border crossers: children and young people will familiarize you with the art and culture of the individual neighborhoods. Throughout the festival, countless other highlights can be discovered among the estimated 350 events. Find your personal highlight at 48 Stunden Neukölln 2009!
