Dead Pioneers, the Indigenous-led band from Denver, is on the verge of the highly anticipated release of their third album "Wagon Burner," which is set to be released on June 26 via Hassle Records (Cargo). The band is now returning with a new single featuring Jason Williamson, provocateur of the legendary Sleaford Mods, as a guest vocalist.
The single titled "The Worst Among Us" is a central track on "Wagon Burner" and highlights the band's evolution, expanding their sound far beyond the boundaries of punk rock, with a pulsating post-punk groove underpinning the dark, shimmering melodies of the song.
"While it's easy for me to say that I'm proud of every song on 'Wagon Burner,' I would be neglecting my duty if I didn't admit that this one is among my favorites," admits frontman Gregg Deal. "The way it came together under the guidance of (bassist) Lee. This song feels like a step forward for us, a piece that combines elements that are 100% Dead Pioneers with some other elements that are new. I've said it before and I'll say it again: We're really about the art of this work. 'The Worst Among Us' falls into that category and makes it clear that on the path of 'Dead Pioneers' we sometimes hit a lucky strike more than once."
The combination of Gregg's and Jason's vocals works perfectly; it is delivered with full conviction and the intensity of the lyrics. Sleaford Mods have undeniably influenced Dead Pioneers since their inception.
"I wish I could put into words how excited I am that Jason is on this track. Lee introduced me to Sleaford Mods in 2021 when we met and put together 'Bad Indian.' When the original idea for Dead Pioneers was still 'spoken word with punk riffs,' Lee pointed me to Sleaford Mods and their then-new album 'Spare Rib.' I would be lying if I didn't admit that I've been completely obsessed with Sleaford Mods since then. For 'Wagon Burner,' it feels like the circle has closed again, and I feel deeply honored to share a stage with greats like Jason Williamson."
"Colonialism, imperialism, theft, murder, oppression, and death? Everything a song needs, rounded off by the unmistakable rhythm and voice of Jason Williamson. This song was of great lyrical significance as it recounts some personal experiences while also addressing the broader injustices of colonialism and imperialism. This moment in world history is more meaningful for a song like this than most others. It is crucial right now to address the things that need to be said on a political, social, and cultural level," summarizes Gregg.
Jason Williams adds: "To appropriate land, traditions, or symbols through sneaky tricks or with hard violence – how could I not go along with such lyrics? 'The Worst Among Us' is exactly the kind of song that brings the idea of punk back to life in the listener. On top of that, it is wrapped in a strange Cure/Sisters-of-Mercy atmosphere. I feel very honored to be a part of it."
