All good things come in threes, or BERLIN DISKRET have reinvented themselves.
Or maybe not?
A lot has happened since the last album “Arbeiten und Wohnen“ which was released in 2018 (the review can be read at ramtatta.de under the link: https://www.ramtatta.de/s/reviews/f/details/id/8171/). The biggest change was probably that Mr. Bottrop (among others, ex-Terrorgruppe) has left, and the band has also gained a new female lead vocalist. From now on, Elli holds the microphone.
The band's style has also changed. Mr. Bottrop seems to have left a whole bunch of ideas in the rehearsal room, as the songs sometimes remind more and sometimes less, but always clearly of Acht Eimer Hühnerherzen. The band with which Mr. Bottrop has quite successfully launched in recent years. Meanwhile, the Hühnerherzen fill large halls of underground clubs, like the SO36.
But let's get back to the non-Googleable band, BERLIN DISKRET.
The singing of vocalist Elli has a similar timbre to the voice of Apocalypse Vega and is very prominent in the mix.
Musically, the band has shed some of the grit of past days and has developed more towards NDW and clean '77 punk (if that even exists).
Despite this criticism, there are simply really good songs on this record. Right at the front is the first song “Gott der Straße“. A aptly described observation of all those wannabe heroes who drive 120 km/h on Hasenheide, cheat on their wives, and feel like gods. A terrible breed of humanity, where I don’t know when they decided to no longer participate in evolution. This could become a hit and is also a stylish piece of musical Berlin after multiple listens.
Also great is “Wie funktioniert der Verstand“. The answer is of course...
I don’t know.
How great would it be if neurological basic research would make some progress. Then we would also know why we can no longer speak properly, but only communicate in abbreviations like “HDGDL“.
If BERLIN DISKRET didn’t remind me so damn much of Acht Eimer Hühnerherzen with “Erinnere Dich“, I would say the album is really well done. But that is not the reality. In reality, there are Acht Eimer Hühnerherzen, and BERLIN DISKRET has to measure itself against this band.
BERLIN DISKRET has definitely created a gritty, catchy record that, like our city, has beautiful spots (like the mentioned songs, for example, also “Kinderfrei“).
