TEENAGE BOTTLEROCKET from Laramie, Wyoming (USA) has been around for 23 years now. It's always surprising how time flies.
The band, one of many that have dedicated themselves to the so-called Cali-Punk, has also played at major festivals in Europe, but has always lived in the shadow of big bands like NoFx, Lagwagon, and others. They have released some decent records, but have never been able to make a name for themselves like the aforementioned bands.
Now, they are coming out with a new EP titled “So Dumb / So Stoked” featuring four songs.
Has the band changed their style?
For me, not really. They might be leaning a bit more towards the Ramones musically, but that could also be misleading, because doesn't every punk band have a bit of the Ramones in them?
Are the Ramones not the mother of all (USA) punk bands?
This 7" EP features four solid, forward-driving songs that, especially in terms of vocals, remind me of the Ramones, and stylistically breathe the essence of that great band. That's not a bad reference, and the record is definitely enjoyable and easy to listen to.
However, somehow, when the four songs are over, not much remains. There's little that makes you want to go to your best friend and excitedly announce, “Teenage Bottlerocket has released something new.”
What sticks in your mind the most are probably “So Stoked” and “Heart Attack.”
So, all in all, it's good so far, but nothing more.
TEENAGE BOTTLEROCKET continue to do their thing, and they certainly can, especially after 23 years of band history; they know how it works. Bands like NoFx or Lagwagon also need good opening acts. TEENAGE BOTTLEROCKET are definitely one of those.
