If you think that THE MELMACS are siblings of ALF, those of us who are older certainly remember the TV series from the late 80s, a little hint: ALF is the little shaggy alien who moved in with the Tanners, somewhere in the USA, more or less voluntarily, and had a huge craving for cats...
Yes, THE MELMACS actually have nothing to do with this TV series, and yet quite a lot. Because without the last song of their new debut album "Good Advice" => "Planet Malmac", I wouldn't have thought of ALF and the planet Malmac. The band name THE MELMACS did ring a bell, but the TV series is over 30 years old, and it was only with the aforementioned last song "Planet Malmac" that the penny dropped for me.
And what else was there in the late 80s? Vinyl records and cassettes, and I received the latter!
"Good Advice" is already the second cassette I've received in the last few weeks, after not having held these things in my hands for 10 years... Crazy, there's a special point for that, especially since there's also a button and a sticker "Tape or die - Fans against the right" included.
Now let's talk about the music, and the girl and the 3 guys from Saxony offer nice pop garage punk rock. Yes, nice, but they can't really get me excited with it. Those who enjoy sugary pop music with a Hammond organ in the background will find joy in the 11 THE MELMACS songs. Maybe even fans of Brit-pop, but for me, it's just nice pop music, not bad but also not phenomenal. You can listen to it when you want to switch off, do nothing, let your legs dangle, with a cocktail in hand, letting the sun shine on your belly at the beach.... But since that never happens for me, these almost 30 minutes of MELMACS music will probably disappear into my cassette archive. But maybe you can switch off more often, then give MM, the MELMACS Music a try.
