What? They’re still around?
That was my first question when I received the information that the Swiss band is unleashing a new record titled “The High Side” to the world. Record is indeed the right term, because “The High Side” is actually only available on vinyl, as an LP. No CD and no dead digital files, because music lives, and it does so best on vinyl.
With 33 years of band history behind them, one might think that the band has become a bit quieter, a bit more subdued. However, the opposite is true.
The three Swiss, who have been regularly releasing a new album every 3-4 years since 2003 (which have passed me by for at least the last 10 years) and have now reached a total of 12 albums including “The High Side,” sound as full of energy as if age has left no marks on them.
LOMBEGO SURFERS describe their music as Voodoo Punkrock. Now everyone can ponder what that exactly means. It’s better to listen to the new record with its twelve songs. The style that the trio plays is quite peculiar.
The Stooges are referenced as comparisons, which fits quite well. However, there’s even more to it. Blues, swamp, stoner, ’77 punk rock, here and there even rockabilly and rock’n’roll, it’s a wild brew. A strong cocktail that looks interesting, tastes interesting, so interesting that you want to order more.
LOMBEGO SURFERS have their very own style that they have been playing for many years. The band is not playing their current tour in large clubs, but that’s okay. They don’t really belong there. The Swiss are more suited to a small club, a hot room where their music is celebrated frenetically.
With “The High Side,” LOMBEGO SURFERS have released an album that showcases the full range of their abilities. Music that is different, music that is special.
