There are bands that release a best-of album for a round or at least semi-round anniversary. But anyone can do that.
ASHPIPE from Piedmont, Italy, was founded in 2007 and has decided to release a best-of album now. "13 Years and still waiting for Wave" is the title of this fine piece and combines 19 songs over more than 73 minutes, of which 16 songs belong to the band's previous work but have been remastered. The other three songs are considered bonuses. An unreleased track is also included. Fans can therefore purchase this without hesitation.
The release can be seen as a best-of, but I would view it more as a showcase of their work. This is partly due to the scope, the wide stylistic spectrum that the band represents, but also because the band has experienced many lineup changes. Some musicians came and went, and some returned. A lot has happened not only within the band over the last 13 years. The band can look back on many concerts, three released albums, six singles, and one EP.
For those who do not yet know the Italians, ASHPIPE consists of eight members. They perform with two singers, two guitarists, a drummer, a bassist, a keyboardist, and a violin and mandolin player. Well-rounded on stage, they play a sound that has its roots in punk rock and rock. The violin and mandolin add a subtle folk note to the songs, while the keyboard supports the melodic arcs, being present but rarely dominant. Overall, it sounds like more or less driving, forward-moving punk rock with ska and folk influences.
The mix is danceable, suitable for moshing, and catchy to the ear.
Lyrically, the band does not hold back, and alongside personal experiences and thoughts, there is a lot of social criticism. There is indeed much that is not going well in the world, but also in Italy. Starting from politics, the treatment of refugees, to the treatment of people who are not doing well, all of this is of course presented with a leftist, anti-fascist attitude.
For those who know the band, there is at least something new to hear here, and for those who do not know the band yet but can relate to Talco, Los Fastidios, or Banda Bassotti, they should give this octet a chance.
