WOW! Now I really have a bombastic debut album in front of me! Pompous to the tips of my hair and damn genius! Actually, it has been here for a while because I simply lack the words for this review! Pompous, bombastic, and so on are not enough for this album! Even after what feels like the fiftieth listen of "Aevolution," I am still more than thrilled, while at the same time still lacking the right words to praise these 9 songs!
Let me start differently.....
...to move forward musically, one must be brave....
...have the courage to leave the countryside for the city, and if the city is not enough, then to the big city, and if that is still not enough, then only Hollywood will help! And that is exactly what Mark Maension did by turning his back on his homeland Italy and moving across the big pond to California.
Because, as so often, Europe simply lags behind in musical progress, especially when it comes to nu metal and the musical environment. LA is simply closer to the musical future than a suburb of Naples. Maybe that’s why Mark Maension calls his music "FutuRock." Although metal still somehow needs to fit into this crossover hybrid label. And so everything that has rank and name mixes into these 36 minutes, from KORN and LIMP BIZKIT to NINE INCH NAILS and TOOL. Appropriately, on the debut album, none other than Fred Durst supports by singing in the fourth song “Chrysalis.” Not that Mark Maension needs it, but it just fits; the two complement each other excellently in the song!
But the other 8 songs are also excellently arranged. Everything fits, from the powerful, stirring vocals to the last driving beat. However, none of the 9 songs feels monotonous or chaotic due to the style mixes. "Aevolution" is simply perfectly staged from the first to the last second. Great! I can only say buy, buy, buy. And that’s exactly where the problem lies!
The Maension are on a (still) pretty small label, so it won’t be so easy to get the album. However, since they are still musically entertaining the old Europe and moving from village (Lippstadt) to village (Minden), one should take the chance and purchase the CD at their gigs!
I do have to give one minus point, though; I don’t have a booklet, no lyrics, nothing... :-(
And so I continue to wonder why in most photos there are only Mark Maension plus a lady, while four people are visible on their Facebook and website. On the other hand, this minus point is simply not deserved by "Aevolution"; it is just brilliant, which is why it gets full marks!!!
