A long, long time ago, I last purchased an issue of VISIONS. From the mid-90s to the early 2000s, I often bought a copy of the music magazine. Because it featured bands whose musical styles were out of place in PLASTIC BOMB. However, I haven't had a PLASTIC BOMB subscription for a decade now. While around the millennium I knew almost every band that appeared in VISIONS or PB, that gradually changed over the next 2-3 years. In the current issue of VISIONS, I don't even recognize half of the bands anymore. :-( And I don't even know if I want to get to know them. If these bands sound similar to the musical groups on the CD supplement, then I really don't need them. Aside from SOULFLY, the other 11 bands mean nothing to me. And to be honest, it's not worth it, as no song on the 155th VISIONS supplement can truly excite me, not even the new SOULFLY song. The songs by PINKISH BLACK, DAVE HAUSE, and ARLISS NANCY are quite nice, by the way, you can find a review of the new album by the latter at: http://www.ramtatta.de/s/reviews/f/details/id/5958/
But why did I even buy this commercial music magazine with its 164 pages, with manageable advertising (!)? Because I'm a gawker!!!
That blood-smeared face of CASPER on the cover truly lured me in, and I was burning with curiosity to know if he, like the "false" GRAF from UNHEILIG (there's only one "real" GRAF and he comes from Berlin, not Aachen!), was bitten in the snout by a dog. To get straight to the point, no, CASPER was spared that fate. Besides this "bloody" photo, there’s also a corpse paint photo in the issue, which I wouldn't have expected from CASPER despite his tattoos. But I also belong to the few who come from CASPER's neighborhood, alias Benjamin Griffey (he grew up in the next village over) and do not have his mega album XOXO. I only know 2-3 songs from the radio, and that has been enough for me so far. So I don't really know CASPER, on the other hand, I heard about him 8 years ago when BEXX, who was almost always at the concerts of my old band (NON CONFORM) in the 90s, arranged concerts for CASPER in our hometown. I wouldn't have spent the 6.90 euros just because of CASPER, even though a live recording of CASPER from the Berlin "Magnet" is included, allowing me to actually experience (?) CASPER's singing, which I don't like, by the way. One last word about CASPER, then I really will stop, it doesn't sound like 1000 frenzied spectators at the concert, more like 60.... *done*
There were three more reasons why I decided to buy a VISIONS again after many years. They are: interviews with DIE ÄRZTE, SYSTEM OF A DOWN, and PIXIES, while I also included NIRVANA, JUPITER JONES, and KORN as bonuses. Some interviews are really bad, not because of the questions but the answers, e.g., from SERJ TANKIAN (SOAD) and the GOLDENEN ZITRONEN. Others are better than expected, e.g., from DAVE GROHL and KRIST NOVOSELIC (NIRVANA) or the profound report on CBGB (R.I.P.). So there’s a lot, a lot to read, and that means time, a lot of time that I needed for it....
Conclusion: The price/performance ratio is not reasonable, at least for me. On the other hand, I now know which records I need to check out, as the bands TOUCHÈ AMORÈ, 65DAYSOFSTATIC, and AVENGED SEVENFOLD meant nothing to me until now.
So compromise: 5 points.
