Freiburg (in Breisgau) is slowly becoming a rock stronghold.... Two weeks ago, I discussed SELFISH HATE, the first Freiburg (hardcore) band in years, and now I have the second band from this beautiful city between the Upper Rhine and the Black Forest in my hands: BACKSLIDE.
The band name BACKSLIDE sounded somehow familiar to me. There was a street punk band from Freiburg about 10-15 years ago that became quite well-known with the albums "Oi! Fuck and Destroy", "Join the Backslide", and "Terror Age", but then they disappeared into obscurity.
Now BACKSLIDE is back and surprises me with melodic alternative rock 'n' roll that can be found somewhere between BACKYARD BABIES, SOCIAL DISTORTION, and FOO FIGHTERS.
And they do it quite well; the four Freiburg musicians absolutely impress me with their fourth album, which is definitely a balancing act. However, some melodic passages on the 39-minute-long album "A Dark And Blackened Night" sound very familiar to me, to the point that I can even hear "Reality" by Richard Sanderson (La Boum). But somehow, everything has already been done before, and accordingly, it is quite difficult to find new great melodies today.
I still like the 11 BACKSLIDE songs; the lyrics are good, the sound is good, and the booklet is simply designed but contains all the important information. The only thing missing is the indication of who plays the keyboard, as it can be heard in some songs but is not mentioned in the booklet.
Let the tour begin; I am looking forward to seeing BACKSLIDE live....
