With KING CANNONS, yet another band from Australia is making its way to Europe to launch their first EP after three years of traveling, gathering impressions, and processing experiences.
The band quickly found fans among the Düsseldorf band Broilers, who are taking them on a joint tour. To make the trip to Europe worthwhile, the Australians will play some club concerts after the tour with Broilers.
Before the album is released in Europe, the self-titled EP serves as their debut. The band presents five songs.
The very first song “Take the Rock“ reminds one of The King Blues, of stadium rock, and at the same time instills courage. The chorus and title “Take the Rock“ are already deeply embedded in the ear canals after just the second listen, as if one has known the song forever.
“Teenage Dreams“ continues in a similar vein. Particularly the background vocals and catchy melody of the song make it a piece that is enjoyable to listen to.
Track three “Gasoline“ then strongly leans towards The King Blues again. Lyrically, the band is also aligned with The King Blues. Here, for the first time, it is clear that the band is criticizing the current conditions. No punches are pulled here.
Unfortunately, the lyrics are not included with the EP, but they are available on the band's homepage, so that anyone interested can quickly find out what the folks from Down Under are about.
KING CANNONS connect in their lyrics the depiction of current conditions with dreams, showcasing injustices while simultaneously offering a certain kind of hope. It is the hope that there is somewhere a place that is more beautiful than what one knows.
The fifth song “Time to Yourself“ shows the band from a completely different side, namely from the perspective of reggae and ska. The song comes across as very relaxed. The beat is perfect for enjoying herbal medicinal products as well as for dancing leisurely in the sun.
A small excerpt from “Time to Yourself“:
Time to yourself is what you need to be well.
Time to not be hearing people fighting and shout
Time to ease up on your body, your mind as well.
It always…
Be time to work, when it be time to roll.
Be time to jam, I got no time for my girl.
Feet up and resting, I should be out in the world.
In the busy city you know…
Live! Enjoy! Do what you want and not what others want!
The Australians are absolutely right, but rarely has this theme been presented in such a relaxed number.
KING CANNONS demonstrate with their debut EP that they have a lot to offer, both musically and lyrically. This band is one to watch, and if the album is even remotely as good as the EP, then KING CANNONS will definitely embark on a victorious journey.
