Upon first listening to the album “Ocean´s Tale“, I was truly surprised that music like this still exists.
Grunge in the style of Nirvana combined with clean vocals, occasional screamo attacks, aggressive guitars, and there you have the band's style.
However, I would be doing THE CONVOIS a disservice by only describing them this way. The band indeed reminds one of the heyday of grunge, but they are different. With partly two-part, English vocals, combined with aggressive guitars, intricate melodies, and a fat-sounding drum kit along with a supporting, rumbling bass, this is what the band from Trier offers. And it is much more than just grunge.
Considering that the band has only been around since 2010, “Ocean´s Tale“ sounds very mature, not only in terms of production but also in terms of the songs. The band has worked hard on this, as most combos do not produce something like this as a debut.
So far, everything is sprinkled with good signs, and I think that songs like “This is the Way“, “Princess“, or “Step Up“ will work well live. What keeps me grounded, however, is simply the fact that there is nothing new being blasted through the speakers by the band. These are songs that have been heard often in one form or another and after a while, they all sound the same. I don't mean to disparage THE CONVOIS, but even though their large pirate ship on the cover sails alone through the seas, the band is, in truth, one among many. That is enough to make a decent debut and has been sufficient to play some good support shows, but it is still not enough to develop a distinct character. Nevertheless, the band should be kept on the radar. What is not yet, can still become.
