Understatement is something else. Here, the promotional sheet accompanying the new release from the Finnish Rocksteady 2-Tone reggae band THE VALKYRIANS is quite bold.
While THE VALKYRIANS may be a known name in the scene, especially among true old-school fans, an album solely of cover versions? Does the band have no original ideas? Is this really necessary?
These are valid questions, as many bands are out there trying to increase their popularity with cover versions. However, the Finns don’t (need to) do that anymore. So, what about their original ideas? Do they really not have any? At least while listening to the album, that impression does not hold.
THE VALKYRIANS tailor 14 songs into a garment of danceable 2-Tone, Rocksteady, and laid-back reggae, which looks as if the songs have never worn another outfit.
The original songs and their styles are quite diverse. Blondie, 999, Cock Sparrer, The Clash, The Adverts, and Elvis Costello are just a few of the artists who wrote the original versions of the songs that shine anew after being reworked by the five-piece.
The band has hardly committed to the fast ska of more recent times. This has not changed with this output. All the songs come in a maximum mid-tempo. It’s a tempo that fits wonderfully with summer. Hammock, rum, and the songs from “Punkrocksteady” come softly from the speakers. Perfect! Life can be so beautiful.
It’s a truly relaxed album that the band has released here. All songs come in an absolutely unique interpretation, making the listening experience not only interesting the first time but also fascinating in how perfectly the band manages to package the songs in versions that sound as if they were originally like that. Not many bands can achieve this, which further elevates THE VALKYRIANS.
The record is, of course, also soothing for the cold and dark months that are now coming. “Punkrocksteady” brings summer back into the living room.
