CD Review - Blitzkid
The likable US horror punk band "Blitzkid" has struck again and released a new long player.
After the truly fantastic concert in Düsseldorf, I was of course very curious about the new work.
Considering that Blitzkid has already released a proud 9 albums and has been on tour non-stop for 14 years, "Apparitional" sounds very fresh compared to many other bands that often show signs of fatigue.
As I said, I had already heard quite a bit live and was very convinced, but the album is simply worth recommending.
With "Head over Hills", the opening track, you immediately get the right direction, which tempts you to crank up your home stereo. Of course, the horror punk genre is always compared to Misfits. But that would be completely out of place here, because Blitzkid sounds very distinctive to my ears. Harmonious multi-voiced singing and a driving drumbeat is exactly the right recipe for a perfect start.
With "They're all dead", they casually churned out a track that showcases the voice of ARGYLE GOOLSBY (Bass/Vocals) beautifully. Very pleasant hook lines, refreshing melodies, and of course a few well-arranged shouts from the background that could definitely come a bit more to the forefront.
"Blutsauger", at first I was surprised. A German title. But that was a misconception. In their native language, they indulge in vampirism here. By the third track, one must already say that future horror punk bands shouldn't be surprised that there are no more comparisons with Misfits, but rather Blitzkid will be pulled from the drawer. Completely distinctive, perfectly produced, and simply good.
Just like "The Awakening", in my opinion a future classic in this genre. Fast, brutal, and always melodic with earworm character. In "Mr. Sardonicus", it gets a bit quieter for once, and BLITZKID has borrowed a bit from "Black Sabbath", the old masters of dark rock. Sluggish drums and heavy guitar sounds create a gloomy atmosphere.
But that is immediately blown away again with "Mr. Gore", a fast, pounding punk rock number. It's simply great what the band shows here. At no point does it become boring or monotonous. They consistently ensure that the listener receives a large portion of variety. The nice thing about this album is also that you don't have to be a fan of horror punk to enjoy it. Anyone who has even a slight connection to the broad term "rock" will have fun with this record.
This is also clearly shown by the track "Wretched", which can easily be sung along live by all fans, and dear readers, believe me... you will sing along. Those beautiful Ohhooss and Ahhaas. It's simply infectious to see the gentlemen ARGYLE GOOLSBY, NATHAN BANE, and RICKO MORTI. Live a fireworks display, in the studio a fireworks display. What else can I write without it looking like I was paid for it.
15 tracks, without a moment of boredom. Super!!! My album of the month, if not even of the year.
