BONSAI KITTEN come from Berlin and have been around since 2004. The band is named after a term that refers to alleged animal-cruelty breeding of particularly small cats. However, these breeding claims turned out to be unfounded. Rather, it was a satirical representation and provocation aimed at cat breeders.
In the seven years of their band history, the Berliners have celebrated successes, especially in Japan, alongside their debut album, which was also released there. In Europe, the band has also been on an upward trajectory, playing at several major Psychobilly and Punkabilly festivals.
Now, their second album, “Done with Hell,” is being released.
BONSAI KITTEN present ten songs on their second album that perfectly represent the band's unique style. The band, led by frontwoman Tiger Lilly Marleen, plays a catchy, captivating, and always danceable mix of soft Psychobilly, hearty Rockabilly, and influences from Punkabilly. Particularly in the quieter parts, the style comes across as very burlesque. This mix, combined with the distinctive voice of Tiger Lilly Marleen, has rightfully brought the band recognition. The four were not alone in the studio; they were able to enlist Köfte de Ville, the mastermind of Mad Sin, as a high-profile guest vocalist. Köfte sings the song “Done with Hell,” which suits him well and is also the title track of the album, in a duet with Tiger Lilly Marleen. The song is one of the highlights of the album. Other standout tracks on this album include “Don’t mess with me” and the cover version of “Please, Mister Jailer” by Wynona Carr.
Throughout the album, especially in the last songs, the band struggles to maintain the high level set at the beginning. The last songs of the record are not as striking as the first tracks. Overall, however, “Done with Hell” is still a very good album and is highly recommended to all fans of Punkabilly and Psychobilly.
