What comes to mind when Belgium is mentioned? Thick fries? Männeken Piss? The old political bags in retirement at the EU Parliament in Brussels? Well, that used to be my thought. After listening to the debut album by Enemy Rose, I must expand this spectrum to include the thought of punky rock’n’roll in its purest form. Damn, an album that is fun is making its rounds here. The vocals are somewhat of an acquired taste but fit into the overall picture, sometimes sassy, sometimes bored and annoyed. The melodies are spot on. The tempo mostly stays in the mid-range, so it’s more rock than punk. Nevertheless, the sassiness from punk has spilled over and completes the good overall impression. Here we have 12 songs in just under 40 minutes that will fully satisfy fans of rock’n’roll and proto-punk noise (as it says in the promo sheet, and if that doesn’t mean anything). Admittedly, I initially couldn’t get into the band and therefore postponed the review, occasionally listening to the record and its promises. And contrary to the title of the CD, it has kept them, rocking out casually, and soon my foot starts to tap along. The exterior of the disc is also nice, with pleasant artwork and the lyrics in the booklet. The lyrics don’t seem earth-shattering to me, a bit of love here, heartache there, and rock’n’roll sets the overall tone. To wrap things up, I can only say: thumbs up and more of this, beautiful melodies (that don’t hurt anyone), good singing, a heart-wrenching ballad (Tainted (with regret)), and cool rock’n’roll, so overall a cool album.
