30 years ago, WASTED was founded. The band from Helsinki has made a name for itself not only in Finland but also in the rest of Europe within the scene.
WASTED plays a powerful, partly very melodic, partly hardcore, and partly streetpunk-influenced punk rock that has its roots somewhere in the 80s and 90s. The songs are carried by the distinctive voice of Ville Rönkkö. Ville also founded the band “I walkt he Line” in 2003, which played a dark yet very danceable (punk rock) synth sound and has been on ice since 2010.
30 years of punk rock and 30 years of being pissed off, that’s how one could describe WASTED and also the new album “The future is on fire.”
Unfortunately, I only just found out that the band has released “The future is on fire.” This is unfortunately a bit symptomatic for the band. For many years they have been playing catchy, melodic punk rock, very committed and extremely energetic and present on stage, yet they are only known in a rather small scene. This is very unfortunate because not only the distinctive voice of Ville but also the melodic arcs that the band plays, wrapped in a powerful sound dressed in leather jackets, deserve to be heard. Songs like “Tomorrow’s not promised today” or “Stay Sane” exemplify what the band is capable of. There are no failures to report on the eleven-song strong album.
I wish the band that after 30 years and with the current album “The future is on fire” (how right they are) they become more well-known. They deserve it, and anyone who doesn’t know the band yet should give them a listen and give the Finns a chance.
