With four studio albums and countless captivating live concerts – even during the pandemic – the Swedish all-female band Thundermother has repeatedly proven their great artistic potential. In their latest release, 'Black And Gold', the highly talented group channels their extraordinary qualities even more purposefully and presents a true milestone in their career. 'Black And Gold' is undoubtedly the strongest Thundermother opus to date, an album with twelve magnificent rock songs that sound cohesive yet are multifaceted and diverse. "From our perspective, all the tracks on the new record are standalone hits," beams guitarist and band founder Filippa Nässil. No doubt: she and her three bandmates Guernica Mancini (vocals), Emlee Johansson (drums), and Mona Lindgren (bass) have once again stepped up in every respect. Filippa: "It was about taking the next step after our 2020 release 'Heat Wave'. That’s why we adjusted all the important levers to reach an even higher level with 'Black And Gold'. We developed complete demo versions for a total of 20 song ideas and played them for friends and colleagues to select the twelve strongest tracks based on their feedback."
Filippa Nässil mentions typical Thundermother numbers like 'Wasted' or 'Loud And Free', both pure party rockers with a lively feel-good appeal. The first single release, which includes an impressive video shot at the Stockholm 'Virtual Star Studios' in front of one of the largest greenscreen screens in Europe, premiered on April 8, 2022. Additionally, there are numerous other highlights to discover on 'Black And Gold', such as the gripping groove rocker 'I Don’t Know You', which gives Thundermother a top-notch rock radio favorite, or the title track 'Black And Gold', to which Filippa contributes four guitar tracks: "I play rhythm, solo, and slide guitar, and on top of that a so-called talk box, like the one you know from Bon Jovi. I still don’t know how I’m going to manage all four components on stage," she laughs. A particularly colorful vibe is exuded by the track 'Look No Hooks', about which Filippa says: "We loved this Sixties flair from the moment we discovered it!" In contrast, 'Hot Mess' is a rather unusual track for Thundermother, which Filippa Nässil humorously describes as "a mix of Aretha Franklin and Aerosmith" and admits that her band is a bit surprised by this song themselves. Last but not least: In the ballad 'Borrowed Time', singer Guernica Mancini tells of the brief, adrenaline-fueled moment of happiness right after a concert, before the band exhaustedly drives in the nightliner to the next performance location.
'Black And Gold' was produced, mixed, and mastered at the Stockholm 'Baggpipe Studios' and the Copenhagen 'Medley Studio' by Danish Søren Andersen, who also worked on 'Heat Wave' (among others, ranked 6 in the German charts). "Our new album is a significant improvement in every respect, both compositionally and in terms of production," says Filippa Nässil, who has been studying at the London 'Songwriting Academy' for several months. "This time, the goal was to focus exclusively on songs that will appeal to every rock music fan and ultimately even my mother.
We feel stronger as a team than ever. Thundermother is a rock band, we live and love rock 'n' roll, we have already played countless concerts and will continue to perform in every city where we are wanted. Because our goal is: With 'Black And Gold', we want to get to know as many new cities and countries as possible!"
The four Swedes will have plenty of opportunities for that: In 2022 alone, nearly 35 concerts are planned on German soil, as well as a two-month North America tour starting at the end of August as the support for rock giants Scorpions and Whitesnake.
The album was released in vinyl, CD, and digital formats via AFM Records.
