With the second single from their upcoming EP “Satan und Ischariot,” the Berlin band Gene Galaxo shows that gentrification and its current development may not be a cheerful topic, but it can still be taken with humor, if not even must be.
“Alles OK!” is a pleasure to listen to: a grooving bass line and dance-inspiring drums form the foundation. This is complemented by a male choir that recalls lines from Freddy Quinn and, not least, the ironic lyrics of the frontman.
All of this is supported by Dyan Valdes (Die Sterne/Mexican Radio) on a squeaky Vermona organ and the sweet yet cheeky vocals of Verita Vee, mixed into a joyful feast for the ears with the help of Slime guitarist Christian Mevs (who has already worked the mixing desk for Rocko Schamoni and Tocotronic).
With this, the otherwise rather rough and dark-sounding Gene Galaxo presents themselves from an unusually carefree side. However, behind the mischievous dance hit facade lies a bitter reality. For “Alles OK!” deals with gentrification, the elimination of free spaces, and the ever-growing difficulty of affording a life in modern Berlin.
Mischkah's concrete inspiration primarily stemmed from personal experiences. Due to immediate terminations, the music producer had to search for, move into, and expand new studio spaces twice within the last 5 years.
The official video, again directed by Yonder Void and Max Paul Maria, is equally captivating. It could not visually capture the bittersweet irony of the single better. In a constant, strong contrast, live footage of the Köpi eviction is alternated with images of the band members cheerfully walking through the streets of Berlin and giving flowers to unsuspecting passersby.
It is truly a testament that the German capital, despite many losses of its original charm, is not completely lost yet. It still houses many passionate residents who actively fight for their increasingly corrupted soul and know how to have fun in it.
