From an acoustic trio to one of the most successful German rock bands. From an idea, hard work, unwavering belief to several Top-10 and three No. 1 albums. To sold-out tours, shaking castles, and the most loyal fans around the world. From the latest album "Kompass zur Sonne" to an exciting milestone: 25 (now 27) years of In Extremo!
For an incredible quarter of a century, the band has fascinated with their captivating energy, which – in perfection! – arises from this unique blend: Between historical influences and the powerful sound of their metal guitars, between medieval instruments, folklorically-archaic as well as modern rhythms, sing-along anthems in German and dialect, between pure full throttle and goosebump melodies, so much more than music is created. It is an atmosphere, a feeling, a connection that makes them as unique as they are successful.
Founded in 1995 by singer Michael Robert Rhein, who, as an enthusiastic visitor of medieval events, had the idea to seek companions for an acoustic ensemble. He found them, and together they brought the music from that time to life with medieval cover versions on historical instruments. The first recordings followed in 1996 in the form of "In Extremo", a first music cassette for self-distribution. In addition to this project, there was also a rock band, and the attempt to combine the two was equally liked by musicians and audiences. Thus, what obviously belonged together gradually came together, and was initially heard on two tracks of the following album, now referred to as "Die Goldene" (1997). The two formations drew closer together, and already in April 1998, the first concert took place in complete In Extremo formation. Although the more acoustic "Hameln" (1998) was released in parallel, this restless and diverse creativity soon caught the attention of indie labels. Still in the same year, the rock album "Weckt die Toten" and the live album "Die Verrückten sind in der Stadt" with the medieval program were released.
Just before the new millennium, the breakthrough finally began: The band signed with the major Universal Music. "Verehrt und angespien" (1999) entered the German album charts at a sensational 11th place. The following "Sünder ohne Zügel" (2001) ultimately marked the real breakthrough, not least because of the first original songs featured on it. This self-compositional path was consistently continued by the septet on "7" (2003) and "Mein rasend Herz" (2005), which included the song "Liam", rewarded with 3rd place at the "Bundesvision Song Contest" and a significantly increasing public interest. Almost alternately, live and studio albums such as "Sängerkrieg" (2008), which addressed the prevailing casting show craze at the time and led the band to the top position of the album charts for the first time, followed by another No. 1 placement with "Sterneneisen" (2011) and "Kunstraub" (2013) at No. 2.
For the 20th anniversary, the extensive box set retrospective "XX" was released in 2015, the best-of compilation "40 wahre Lieder" in 2017, and in between "Quid Pro Quo", which debuted at No. 1 in 2016 and remained in the charts for 15 weeks, followed by the corresponding live recording titled "Quid Pro Quo Live".
The new album "Kompass zur Sonne" was released in March 2020 and immediately reached No. 1 on the charts. The video for the first single "Troja" was filmed in Berlin-Schöneweide under the direction of Jörn Heitmann (among others Rammstein, Die Toten Hosen) and impressed with powerful social criticism.
At least as visually as well as sonically and pyrotechnically powerful, the big birthday will now finally be celebrated with fans, companions, and friends: after a two-year forced break, fans can finally look forward to an extensive hall and studio tour as well as some other surprises surrounding the quarter-century of their favorite band.
