The Norwegian Julie Mehlum was traveling through Europe with Interrail when she met Phil Haussmann at an open-air party in Berlin in the summer of 2010. A joint trip to the Normandy coast, the first nights spent together drinking whiskey, live sessions with French friends, and six guitars in an old barn followed, which would change their lives forever.
At the moment their voices first met, it "clicked" both musically and personally.
Two months later, they were on stage together at the Øya Festival 2010 in Oslo: a performance that some might remember, as Phil Haussmann fell off the stage towards the end of the set due to a calculation error.
Julie & Phil became inseparable, left school where it belonged, and instead traveled Europe. They lived at night and played guerrilla concerts in abandoned places for anyone who wanted to listen.
The school of life had begun!
While they had lived in different countries for the first two years, Phil moved to Oslo in early 2012. Shortly thereafter, they produced and released their first 4-track EP, the (completely overproduced) "Farewell, Little World-EP".
The following year, they spent without money and jobs in Oslo, on the sofas of various friends, until they had overstayed their welcome and had to hit the streets. After a few weeks of homelessness, they packed their things and moved to Berlin.

That was two years ago.
In the meantime, they have written the original music for a TV film ("Polizeiruf 110: Kinderparadies"), as well as for Leander Haußmann's production of "Hamlet" at the Berliner Ensemble, performing live at the shows. They made music for "Hai-Alarm am Müggelsee", where they also played guitar by the campfire for young people who were about to be eaten by the shark. Furthermore, they produced a second EP, "The Never Read Letter-EP", produced by Sven Regener and recorded at home, supported artists like Thees Uhlmann & Gabrielle Aplin, and went on a club tour with Element Of Crime.
Apples In Space create very personal songs about themes such as loss, death, fatal love, growing up, and losing sight of one's own dreams. Although they are only in their early 20s, the two write versatile, emotional, and wise songs. Musical film noir.
It doesn't matter whether the lyrics are narrative in nature, like "My Love Is A Bullet", or more lyrical, like "The Never Read Letter".
If you listen closely, they will hit you: poetic lyrics wrapped in catchy melodies, simple yet effective arrangements, performed with despair, love, authenticity, and passion.

While Phil Haussmann, raised in Berlin as a scion of a theater dynasty, is no stranger to anything extravagant, artistic, or over-the-top, Julie Mehlum initially grew up quietly in Norway, later moved with her family to New York, and was musically supported from a young age by her parents, both psychiatrists, who laid the foundation for a musician's life.
