"Driving down the highway and listening to great music is surely one of the best things life has to offer, right? I definitely want to grab a guitar right after and write a new song," wrote The free wheelin Dirk Darmstaedter in his blog about a year ago. Since 1988, he has been constantly pushing the gas musically. He is known as the singer of the Jeremy Days, who composed a few stylish hits of the caliber of "Brand New Toy" from the late eighties, and he has been known since 2002 as the head of tapete records, the Hamburg independent record label that he built from scratch and which now also hosts international acts. He is known with his band as Me and Cassity and of course simply as one of the best songwriters in the country, as "one of Germany’s underground pop heroes," as the New York Times recently assessed. Now the time had come to also use the brakes and release the new album "Before We Leave." A contradiction? Well... this is the world of Dirk Darmstaedter.
The brake belongs to the transporter tapete records, which Darmstaedter drove for twelve years alongside his own tour cruiser. A kind of Magical Mystery Bus, where you have fun in the back, but also a lot of responsibility at the wheel. Darmstaedter handed over the keys to the tapete office to his partner at the end of last year. A farewell "on good terms," as he emphasizes. "As label head, I achieved everything I wanted: hey, I signed Bernd Begemann and Lloyd Cole!" he grins. "Time just flies by, and I want to chase the unknown a bit, to be out there without a safety net and double bottom, to focus entirely on my music. Sometimes you just have to let go of things to see what else is waiting for you."
"Before We Leave," Darmstaedter's fifth solo album so far, has been released on his new label Teaneck Records. A label just for him, with a name that has a very special meaning for him, or rather, two. At least.
