It's high time to give punk a new face, thinks Swiss. And so the Hamburg native with alpine roots presents a new sound that feels as if the musical genre has just emerged from a fountain of youth. The singer and lyricist with the futuristic hairstyle brings a fresh cocktail of youthful themes to the stage. Stylistically, he pours Hip Hop, punk rock, ska, NDW, and 70s political rock into a shaker and shakes with all his might. The result is a brand-new mix. Lyrically, he demonstrates the verbal power of his past days as a hip hopper, singing about wanderlust, insecurity, pill abuse, maternal love, utopias, and feeling lost. Occasionally, he also employs the stylistic device of self-irony, which is often hard to find in both hip hop and rock 'n' roll.
“Große Freiheit” is the debut album of the son of a Swiss actor and a German theater maker. With this record, he gives punk a solid kick in the butt. “Der Scheiß ist live” is the opener, which means that Swiss does not work with pre-made beats from a factory, but with musicians made of flesh and blood who sweat from every pore. The title track “Große Freiheit” is a homage to his hometown, “Hamburg is the Große Freiheit, the city that made me who I am,” says Swiss. “It is a personal breakthrough for me. The great freedom also means wanderlust and death, themes that occupy me a lot.”
